Glover: Notes
Dave Glover Speaks
It's not often that one gets to hear from a person whose experience as an attorney began as a result of a bar bet and whose career as a radio talk-show host was secured practically by the seat of his pants or not.
That's the world of "Dave Glover", the host of The Dave Glover Show" on 97.1 Talk FM from 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday. Glover began his presentation to the year-end gathering of PRSA members and friends, Dec. 14 at the Junior League by explaining that, when in college, he expressed interest in entering the field, even though he never quite knew exactly what it meant."
P.R. was what you told people you were going to do when you graduated college and you didn't have the slightest idea what you were going to do," he said. Glover shared many anecdotes about his own life, including ones that turned out to be life-changing. After 10 years as an attorney, he realized that he couldn't continue working in that profession.
"It's really when I realized that you shouldn't spend a minute of your life doing what you don't want to do," he said.
And he did share three suggestions to follow when pitching stories (or in his case, trying to secure a guest on his show):
1. Show passion for what you are doing and the person/product you are trying to "sell." And never fake your passion. "Media can catch that immediately," he said.
2. Honesty. The media knows that you want something from them the second they pick up the phone or open thee-mail. Be honest from the very beginning, don't try the "butter-up soft sell," and you'll have a better chance of success.
3. Audience is everything. In Dave's situation, you may offer him the best guest in the world. But if it is not a guest that his audience would be interested in hearing from, then he's not interested. And it's up to the public relations professional to convince him why he should have this guest.
