Faces in the Crowd at Our 2007 Year-End Luncheon

1) Professional Participation at Pro-Am Day

The annual PRO-AM Day with Saint Louis University is coming Friday, Feb. 22, and your help is needed. Here is more on the event and how you can assist from Liese Hutchison, APR, a former PRSA-St. Louis Chapter president and an associate professor in SLU's Department of Communications.

Panel format: We have at least three panelists for each (morning) breakout session. The general session usually features four professionals. We ask each professional to give a brief history of themselves as students (where they went to school, what they studied/degree, internship experience), their career path (places they worked, what they did) and then the work they're currently doing, which should fit with the panel topic, and how that's different from other types of PR. This should take 8-10 minutes for each panelist, leaving 20 minutes or so for questions.

Resume reviewers: After lunch, we need 12-15 resume reviewers (162 students attended in 2005) to take a few minutes to discuss the student's resume. How should it be arranged? What is an interviewer looking for? Should there be an objective section? Interviews should run 5-7 minutes per student.

Agency Reps: Instead of having a few of the students drive around St. Louis to various agencies, we're asking agencies to send a representative to the last session of the day. This is the place where you can collect resumes, tell students about your internship program, and explain what you'd be looking for before hiring someone full-time.

Lunch participation: Students will be sitting at the tables during the luncheon (we annually have our monthly PRSA-St. Louis Chapter luncheon at SLU during this program each February). Please interact with them. Ask them what they're studying, are they doing an internship, what do they like about PR/don't like, etc.

Questions? If you have any questions or would like to volunteer in one of the areas, e-mail Liese. Location: All panel sessions and the luncheon are in the Busch Student Center at the NE corner of Grand & Laclede. For exact times of panels and break-out sections check out the 2008 Pro-Am Schedule in our Student Resources section.

2) PRSA St. Louis End-of-Year Survey Results

Did you participate in our end-of-year online survey on the news in 2007 and how you might be approaching media in 2008? Here's what you told us:

While many local public relations practitioners agree that online communications are more effective than in previous years, a minority reported an intent to utilize new media in 2008 aside from delivering more traditional web site content, according to a late 2007 PRSA survey of more than 90 St. Louis-area public relations practitioners.

  • Respondents reported that web communications are more effective than in previous years, including web content (58 percent agreed), posting videos online (46 percent agreed), and pitching bloggers (39 percent agreed).
  • Sixty-one percent of respondents noted that they expanded web content available to the public in 2007. Sixty-eight percent say they'll do so even more in 2008.
  • Fewer than half of respondents say they are planning to post a video online, post comments about a video online, set up an executive blog for public or internal use, or develop a blogging policy.

What's behind our seemingly slow adoption of new media? Budgets? Senior management approvals? Or is our rate of adoption normal due to the novelty of some of these tactics?

If you're interested in discussing these results with other St. Louis practitioners, visit our beta discussion group here and click on "sign in and request membership" to join the group.

As part of the survey, respondents also ranked some of the trends expected to be prevalent in the news in 2008. St. Louis public relations practitioners predicted the top trends to be:

1. Elections
2. War
3. Terrorism
4. Sports/celebrity scandals
5. Sub-prime market
6. Obesity
7. i-anything
8. Sustainability
9. Luxury goods & services

Congratulations to Heather DeHart at DeSmet Jesuit High School, who was the lucky survey participant selected to receive one free pass to a PRSA luncheon in 2008.
