3) The 5 Ws Of Being A Power of Two Volunteer

What: The Power of Two is a partnership between the American Red Cross and the Public Relations Society of America, which provides volunteer opportunities for public relations experts. Power of Two volunteers can serve as disaster public affairs personnel, or provide a variety of needed communication support at the community level for Red Cross chapters, Service Areas, and Blood Services regions.

Why: If you like helping people, the Red Cross is a good place to be, and the Power of Two offers an opportunity to use your communication skills to support the Red Cross as the organization responds to people. Plus, you can earn credits towards maintaining your APR credentials by participating in the Po2 program.

When: You can volunteer when you are available. There are opportunities for the communication professionals to volunteer for two weeks, two days, two hours, or on an ongoing basis. You make the decision.

Where: Wherever you are. With more than 700 Red Cross offices across the U.S., there’s probably one near you. There are also opportunities to volunteer virtually – all you need is a computer and access to the Internet.

How do I sign up? To become involved, e-mail Sharon Alfred, American Red Cross Power of Two project coordinator. You can learn more about Power of Two volunteers by visiting the PRSA Web site. And, by reading the most recent Power of Two newsletter in the Volunteer Services’ spotlight box.

4) Not a Member? Think Career Growth; Join now and Save $50

Not a member of PRSA and PRSA St. Louis? Visit our Membership page and check out the copy in blue. PRSA National is offering a membership special between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31, 2007, whereby it will pick up your St. Louis Chapter dues ($50) for your first year of membership. The special application must be used. And it is good for full membership only. If your membership has lapsed for more than a year, PRSA wants you back. You can use the form and save, as well. If you are just out of college, were a PRSSA member while in school, or are working on a graduate degree, you qualify for other special discounts. Check out the same page.

5) Student Mentoring Program Kicks Off Again; Mentors Needed

Interested in Mentoring? - The Student Relations Committee is gearing up for our fall mentoring program, and new mentors are welcome. Conducted via e-mail, this program enables students at our PRSSA chapters to interact with practitioners and learn more about the profession. We currently do not have enough mentors to accommodate all of the students who have signed up and have a waiting list of students. If you are interested in being a mentor or learning more about the program, e-mail Michelle Mason or call her at (314) 569-7100.
