BusinessWeek's John A. Byrne hardly had time to get behind the podium at PRSA-St. Louis' 60th Anniversary, Nov. 19, before talking change in "The New Media Boom: How it Changes the Way we do Business."

Admitting he was a "print" man, authoring 58 BusinessWeek cover stories, he related that earlier in the day his publication had cut nearly one third of its editorial staff - people whom Byrne had worked with for 18 years. A week later BusinessWeek would announce Byrne's own exodus to a digital media position in San Francisco (see related story).

A Missouri University journalism school grad, Byrne said the people who were surviving in the print media were primarily hyper-local news providers and organizations who diversified revenue streams. On the other hand he sees new opportunities and new media approaches for good writers and communicators in niche reporting. "Surprisingly, good things can happen out of desperation," the veteran editor/writer said.
